Coping well with withdrawal
Getting through the process of withdrawal can be very difficult. Most people have other responsibilities such as work or caring for children in addition to struggling with the symptoms of withdrawal. It is encouraging to remember, however, that many people have successfully been through benzodiazepine withdrawal.
The booklet “Step by Step guide to reducing benzodiazepines and recovery from withdrawal” has more detailed advice on coping with specific withdrawal symptoms. Also go to “Help Sheets” for help with common problems in withdrawal.
Some things that have been shown to be useful during withdrawal include:
- Relaxation (do not be concerned, however, if you find this too hard at times.)
- Healthy diet with lots of fruit & vegetables. Drink lots of water.
- Reduce stimulants such as tea & coffee
- Avoid alcohol until you have recovered from withdrawal symptoms
- Exercise as much as you are able
- Rest as much as possible and take warm aromatherapy baths
- Keep a diary of your progress
- Keep in touch with a telephone support service like Reconnexion, if available
- Some people find acupuncture, Chinese medicine or natural remedies helpful. Ensure you see a qualified practitioner with expertise in this area.
- Ask for help, if necessary, in undertaking tasks such as shopping or cooking
- Involve and inform family members. Even very young children are often very supportive and helpful if they understand that their parent is sick and needs their help.
