Social Phobia

Social Phobia is an excessive concern about one’s inadequacies, and a fear that other people are thinking negatively or judgementally. If you have Social Phobia, you will probably worry about saying or doing something embarrassing, making mistakes, not looking right or not behaving as you think you should. You also probably worry a lot about other people noticing that you look anxious or nervous, for example sweating, having a trembling voice, shaking or blushing.

You may have difficulty speaking in front of others, making telephone calls, eating in front of others, or signing your name in front of other people.

The anxiety associated with social phobia can mean that you avoid stressful situations which often affect your study, career prospects or relationships. You might also be risking your health by drinking or taking sedatives to help you feel calm in social situations.

Individual counselling is very effective for relieving the stress of social phobia. Reconnexion also runs a social phobia cognitive behavioural therapy treatment group.
