What happens in counselling?

Counselling aims to assist the person experiencing depression to understand why and how depression may be occurring at this time. Feeling depressed can be a very lonely time, and people often think that nobody understands how they are feeling.

It can be hard to feel that things will ever get better. The aim of the counselling is to provide a supportive and safe environment and to provide therapy and strategies that research has shown to be effective in lifting depression.

A number of effective strategies are offered which may include:

  • A program to increase activity and exercise

  • A program to increase involvement in pleasurable activities

  • Help with getting extra support at home

  • Assertiveness training

  • Problem solving skills

  • Cognitive therapy

  • Antidepressant medication

  • Relaxation training

  • Mindfulness meditation training

  • Interpersonal therapy

  • Positive psychology
