What is Cognitive Therapy and how does it help?

When we are depressed, our thoughts and perceptions become exceptionally negative, bleak and defeatist. This thinking, in turn, increases the level of depression, and we get caught up in a vicious circle. There may be one main thought or belief which persistently brings on depression and which is very hard to shake.

It might be something like “I’m a worthless person” or “My partner doesn’t really care about me” or “I have no friends”.

Cognitive therapy assists us to identify and change our negative perspective and thoughts, thereby improving our mood and lifting depression. This technique sounds simple but it is very powerful in lifting depression.

The use of Cognitive therapy for treating depression has been well researched and has a good success rate. By learning strategies to counter the depressing thinking, Cognitive therapy also helps to prevent depression returning.
