What is safe use?
Benzodiazepines can be helpful drugs when used safely and appropriately. Recommended safe and appropriate use of benzodiazepines is for no longer than 2 to 4 weeks of daily use OR intermittent use only.
Benzodiazepine prescribing guidelines for doctors recommending safe use include the National Health & Medical Research Council guidelines and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners guidelines. The RACGP guidelines can be found at their website - go to www.racgp.org.au/guidelines/benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines are also commonly used as a general anaesthetic; before surgery or chemotherapy; as a muscle relaxant; and to assist with acute alcohol or drug withdrawal.
